Made From, What Came Before

A vintage kantha throw is made from layered cotton saris — not new cloth, but fabric that has already lived a life. Different saris go into each piece: stripes, florals, plains, prints. Because no two sets of saris are the same, no two throws end up the same. The colour combinations and patterns cannot be repeated, because the source material is always different.

The layers are stitched together by hand using the kantha running stitch; worked across the entire surface, holding everything in place. That stitching creates the characteristic puckered texture that kantha is known for. On a vintage piece, the fabric has already softened from years of use before it was ever quilted. The colours are mellowed. The hand is broken in. It arrives already feeling like something you have owned for a long time.

"Each throw is stitched from a different set of saris — which means the one you receive cannot exist anywhere else. The colours, the combination, the weight of it. Entirely its own."
